Why do Texas pipes freeze?

Freezing and Burst Pipes

Why do Texas pipes freeze during cold spells? Compared to homes in colder climates, most Texas houses are not built with extensive insulation or weatherproofing, making pipes especially susceptible to freezing when temperatures drop. Most folks know that when water freezes, it expands. That expansion is the beginning of the problem, and it is not

always what splits the pipe. Pipes usually break because of pressure. As water in a pipe starts to freeze, ice can form a blockage. The pocket of water that has not frozen yet gets trapped. As that trapped water freezes, it expands and the pressure is what causes the pipe to burst. Once a pipe is blocked with ice, the pressure can rise as freezing continues. In plain terms, if water has nowhere to go, the pipe becomes the weak point.

What Pipes Are Made of and Why It Matters

Most homes use copper, black iron, or PVC type plastic piping. Plastic pipes usually have thicker walls and do not transfer heat as quickly as copper. Copper transfers heat very easily, which means it can also chill faster. The material alone is not enough to prevent freezing. If the pipe is in a vulnerable location and the temperature stays low long enough, even a “better” pipe can still freeze.

Pipe diameter does not solve the problem either. Plumbing sizes are picked for flow and service needs, so changing size just to reduce freeze risk usually does not move the needle.

You may also hear people say hot water pipes freeze and burst faster than cold water pipes. The truth is that once both pipes cool down toward the same temperature, the freezing process is basically the same. If there is a difference, it is usually small and often relates more to air in the system and how the plumbing is laid out than to the water itself.

Where Pipes Freeze Most Often

Pipes freeze when they are exposed to cold air and cannot get enough warmth from the home.

The most common trouble spots are:

  • Attics
  • Crawl spaces
  • Exterior walls
  • Garages and unheated utility rooms
  • Cabinets under sinks on outside walls

Cracks and openings make it worse because cold air can blow right across the pipe. That moving air is a big deal. Wind and airflow can cool pipes faster than people expect. Openings around cable lines, internet lines, and small wall penetrations are common culprits. Even if it is only few degrees below freezing outside, “a little warmer” still may not be warm enough to protect a pipe in an unheated cavity.

Practical Steps to Prevent Frozen Pipes

If temperatures are expected to dip below freezing, here are the best habits to follow:

  • Seal openings where cold air can reach pipes. Keeping cold wind off the pipe matters more than most people realize.
  • Insulate exposed pipes with foam sleeves or fiberglass pipe wrap. Thicker insulation helps.
  • Disconnect exterior hoses and store them inside for the season.
  • Open interior cabinet doors and interior doors so warmer air can circulate.
  • Let vulnerable faucets drip slowly. Flowing water is harder to freeze, and an open faucet can relieve pressure if ice starts to form. If the drip stops, there may already be ice forming in the line.
  • Add insulation or heat protection for pipes in attics and crawl spaces.
  • If a hard freeze is coming and you will be away from home, consider shutting off the main water supply and opening faucets to drain the system as much as possible. Less water in the pipes means less chance of a burst.

Loss Prevention Strategies That Work

When it comes to preventing burst pipes, there are four big strategies. Pipe placement. The best protection is keeping pipes inside conditioned space, where they stay warm. This also includes reducing air leaks, because leaking cold air into a wall cavity can turn that space into a freezer. Pipe insulation. Insulation slows heat loss and can delay freezing long enough to prevent a blockage from forming. It is not a magic shield, but it can make a meaningful difference. Air chambers. You might hear these called water hammer arrestors.

They are usually designed for brief pressure surges. There is a practical argument that they could also help reduce damage during a freeze event by giving pressure somewhere to go, even if the line temporarily freezes and water service is interrupted. Pressure relief fixtures. These would work by releasing pressure at a set level that is well below the burst pressure of the pipe. Instead of the pipe failing, the fixture relieves the pressure into a sink or tub drain. The idea is simple: let pressure out before the pipe becomes the escape route.

What To Do If You Think a Pipe Is Frozen

If you turn on a faucet and nothing comes out, treat it as a warning sign. A frozen pipe can burst as it thaws, so this is a moment to act quickly.

  • Call a qualified plumber if you suspect a frozen pipe.
  • Shut off the main water valve right away.

One important safety note. Do not try to thaw a frozen pipe with a hair dryer or an open flame. That can damage the pipe and create a serious fire risk.
