How Can I Protect My House From Water Damage?

Leaking Ceiling

Water is a necessity in our daily lives, but it can wreak havoc in your home if it runs wild. Water damage hazards can be a costly home insurance claim and impact even the most prepared Texas homeowner. However, there are some things you can do to help prevent or minimize water damage in your home, condo or rental.

FIND where your main water valve is located so you can shut your water off quickly, in case of an emergency. Shutting off the main water supply quickly will save stress, money and time.

EXAMINE your water heater, appliances and connections regularly for signs of corrosion or leaks. Consider upgrading the hoses on your clothes washer, dishwasher and other appliances with a steel-braided one to increase durability.

REVIEW your water bill. A significant change in usage or higher water bill may indicate you have a leak somewhere.

INSPECT showers or tubs to be sure the caulking is watertight.

CLEAN your gutters and downspouts regularly to ensure water moves through them properly and drains away from your foundation.

TEST sensors, sump pumps, backwater valves, and sewer backflow equipment regularly. Consider an alternate power source, add a battery backup or upgrade to a device with a backup source.

INSTALL leak sensors, water detection or automatic shut off devices. Some connect to your wireless network and communicate with a central device or send a notification directly to your smartphone when they encounter moisture.

As a reminder, never leave the house or go to sleep for the night while the washing machine, dishwasher or other appliance is operating.

Water claims costs vary depending on multiple factors – from regional weather patterns and the local cost of mitigation services to the size, condition, and contents of those areas of a home most vulnerable to water backup damages. Review your policy to see if you already have water damage coverage and then speak with your agent about adding the coverages that are important to you.
