Preparing for Hurricanes

hurricane insurance

Severe hurricanes, winds, flooding, and wildfires that have caused widespread damage in recent years have heightened concerns that a changing global climate may be leading to more frequent and extreme natural catastrophes. With hurricane season upon us, we want to remind everyone to be prepared for flooding, high winds, and torrential rains.

Hurricane Terminology

The term hurricane is used for Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclones east of the International Dateline to the Greenwich Meridian. The term typhoon is used for Pacific tropical cyclones north of the Equator west of the International Dateline.

A Hurricane Watch means that there is a threat of a hurricane, but it is not imminent. The watch covers a specific area and time period.

A Hurricane Warning means that a hurricane is expected within 24 hours with sustained winds of 74 mph or more.

It is important to note there may be a waiting period and most companies will not accept new (or increased) coverage applications after a named tropical storm is designated by the United States Weather Bureau. Your local personal independent insurance agent works with multiple insurance companies and can help you quote Hurricane insurance for your Condo, Renters, Apartment, and Home insurance. Hurricane Categories

Based on the Saffir-Simpson Scale Hurricane Wind Scale

Cat 1 – Wind speed of 74-95 mph
Cat 2 – Wind speed of 96-110 mph
Cat 3 – Wind speed of 111-130 mph
Cat 4 – Wind speed of 131-155 mph
Cat 5 – Wind speed of 155+ mph

The 2020 hurricane season is upon us and scientists are already making predictions. Expert forecasts a possibility of 17 named storms for this year’s North Atlantic hurricane season – much higher than the average of 12 storms.

Tips to be Prepared for a Hurricane

  • Check roofs and make repairs as needed.
  • Remove or brace loose equipment and debris.
  • Clear drains and catch basins from obstructions.
